What Is the TEF Canada?

The Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) Canada is a French proficiency test run by Le français des affaires, part of the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts it as proof of French for Express Entry, other permanent residence programs and citizenship.

For immigration you take all four tests on the same day. For citizenship, only listening and speaking are required. Your results are converted into NCLC levels (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens), the French equivalent of the CLB. Strong NCLC levels add points to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and NCLC 7 in all four skills can make you eligible for Express Entry draws for French-speaking candidates.

TEF Canada FAQ

How long does it take to prepare for the TEF Canada?

It depends on your starting level and your target score. Students who already have an intermediate level often need a few weeks to a few months of focused preparation to reach NCLC 7, while beginners need longer. After a first assessment lesson, Carla gives you a realistic timeline.

What TEF score do I need for CLB 7 (NCLC 7)?

According to IRCC's equivalency chart (checked October 2026), NCLC 7 requires at least 249 in listening, 207 in reading, 310 in writing and 310 in speaking, using the "Équivalence ancien score" column of your TEF Canada results. Always confirm on the official IRCC chart before you apply.

What NCLC level do I need for Express Entry?

The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires at least NCLC 7 in all four skills. NCLC 7 or higher in French also earns bonus CRS points and makes you eligible for Express Entry draws for French-speaking candidates. Higher levels earn more points.

How long are TEF Canada results valid?

For Express Entry, your results must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.

Are TEF Canada lessons online?

Yes. Lessons are available online anywhere in Canada, and in person in Mississauga, Ontario.

Should I take the TEF or the TCF?

Both are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and citizenship. They differ in format and scoring, so the better choice depends on your strengths and on test dates near you. See the TEF vs TCF comparison on this site, or ask Carla during your first lesson.
